Golden Opportunity

A global collaboration to understand gold

A call to artists went out in February 2006, inviting artists to participate in a global collaboration in to understand gold. Artists were offered a “golden opportunity” to contribute to an exhibition about gold. They were asked to create something in any material about any aspect of gold and send us digital image of it. There was no jury, and no fee. The only requirement was that the work address the past, present or future of gold. The call was posted on a number of websites and read by an international audience. It was reprinted in various newsletters and was used as an assignment by several teachers.

We are very pleased to present the work of more than eighty artists from nineteen countries. We want to thank each of the artists for their participation and unique contribution to the resulting visual dialog about gold. We also wish to thank the Rudolph Steiner Foundation for their New Initiatives grant, the Marx-Saunders Gallery in Chicago for hosting the premier reception and screening, the Society of North American Goldsmiths for providing the occasion, Ron Graziani for his essay, Robin Casady for his webmastery, and Earthworks for their support.

Golden Opportunity opened with a digital projection and reception held in association with the Society of North American Goldsmiths conference in Chicago, on May 26, 2006 and is part of the Association for Contemporary Jewelry conference, Carry the Can, in July 2006, in London, England.
