Created for sophisticated, fearless wearers, every piece of Sophie Hughes jewelry is thoughtfully designed and handmade in Boston in limited quantities. Sophie uses sustainable materials – like recycled precious metals, and reclaimed or responsibly-sourced gems - and is dedicated to sustainable practices.
Tell your story:
I’m inspired by the challenge of making jewelry that’s totally wearable, day in and day out, both physically and aesthetically. It has to be simple but interesting; comfortable, flattering, and durable. I try on every single piece of jewelry I make, to make sure it lays right on the chest, it hangs balanced from the ear, or is comfortable when shaking hands.
Describe your work:
Sophie is an instinctive artist, compelled by the malleability of raw metal as it gives beneath hammer blows. Rough-hewn, yet distinctively elegant, Sophie’s jewelry embodies an inherent sense of balance: at once raw and refined, masculine and feminine. Each piece is individually forged start-to-finish in Sophie’s Boston studio using the highest quality recycled 18k gold and oxidized sterling silver, along with certified reclaimed or ethically sourced gems, for environmentally and socially responsible jewelry.
Statement of values, principles, and practices:
Each piece is individually forged start-to-finish in Sophie’s studio using timeworn hammers, anvils, hand tools and torches. Sophie uses the highest quality recycled gold and silver, along with certified reclaimed or ethically sourced gems, for environmentally and socially responsible jewelry. Typically, twenty tons of mining waste are produced to mine gold for a single wedding band, at the expense of local communities, workers, and the environment – an unbelievable devastation we thankfully avoid by using sustainable, recycled gold.
