What are
Metalsmiths?

Ethical Metalsmiths was formed for the purpose of stimulating demand for responsibly sourced materials as an investment in the future. We stand for social responsibility, a healthy environment and materials that are consistent with these values.

We believe that studio jewelers and metalsmiths can play an important role in bringing about change. While mining issues are complex and far reaching, our approach is simple. We believe that by working together we can help to create a demand for clean gold and persuade the mining industry that there is a market for change.

Here are some things you can do today:

How You Can Help With Mining Reform Legislation

Did you know that US mining law was written in 1872 and has not been updated to include modern environmental protections?  Read in-depth background and information of why your support for reform of this antiquated law is urgently needed.

Send a letter or call your two senators today. While sending a letter is best, calling your senators is a good option, too. Click here for a sample letter, and here for Senate phone numbers by state.

Tell your senators that even if your state does not have hardrock mines, it is no doubt home to hundreds of independent jewelers and metalsmiths.

If you send a letter, consider attaching your business card and personalizing the letter with a few sentences about yourself and why reform matters to you.

Sign up for our mailing list for future updates and email action alerts. There may be key times, like before a floor vote in Congress, that we will ask you to contact your elected officials.

Spread the word to your colleagues and friends.

Ask your local metals art guild or school to write a letter or call in support of reform. Support from organizations in your state means a lot. Please forward this information to them, and ask them to distribute it to their members.
