Icarus

Wood, wax, brass, fabric and thread, 61 x 12 x .5 inches

The Wright Brothers were inspired to make their airplanes by the myth of Daedalus and Icarus. In the myth, Daedalus tells his son that he should not fly too close to the sun or near the sea, but Icarus ignores his father’s advice and flies higher and closer to the sun. When he gets close to the sun, the wax holding together his wings melt and he falls into the sea. My wings are made from wax and gold (colored) coins that have representations of airplanes. Through history, mankind has a desire to possess wealth and fame- Icarus’ falling into the sea represent the end result of greedy excess.
