Indelible Stain

Rusted steel, 18K gold and copper ring, 25 x 25 x 16 cm

19 gold crosses represent the 19 Yanomami Indians (10 children, 7 women, 2 men) massacred by gold miners on August 17, 1993 within the boundaries of their legally protected land in Roraima, Northern Amazon, Brazil. Not an isolated incident, greed for the wealth of gold and its consequences are still as present today as they were 400 years ago. A band of copper, a by-product mined with gold, is inlaid on the inside of the ring leaving an indelible stain on the finger.
