detail of sugarcoat, from the beauty: poison series

1 ounce of 24K gold, coated with sugar, and organized in a hanging installation...

the beauty: poison series is a study of material exchanges that are alluring and yet potentially misleading at the same time. gold, and other fine metals have a certain inherent conceptual structure due to the worth of these materials. traditional objects that are created from these metals have different meanings to everyone who uses them in a representational manner. for example, a wedding band symbolizes a commitment of some sort between two individuals, actions taken by those individuals may directly relate to how they choose to wear the objects and may be a direct reflection of how much value is placed on the commitment, or the object may be meaningless to the commitment in the first place, and essentially bought in compliance to a larger cultural tradition.
