This work is made of closures (usually plastic) that come pre-made in or on the packaging of our food. A great deal of design and energy goes into the manufacture of these items. We are all very familiar with them, yet really never give them "a seconds thought" before we throw them away.
My
goal is to make the viewer/wearer see these items anew. I do not transform or
alter the items themselves, but seek to accept them as they are and then see
new possibilities that the original designers never intended.
All of the closures are from actual homes, collected by many people for this project. This aspect of involving non artists really was the greatest reward. Many of those I asked to collect for me then asked others and spread the word about what could be done with these funny little bits of trash. Others confessed they collected the clips not knowing why, and would then feel a little guilty or even think it was weird to keep these "worthless" things; these people were happy to give me their collections, glad to finally have a use for them.
