Division

conceptual silverware, 7" x 3/4 x 1/2 inches

The forms of fork, knife and spoon are so familiar to us that we take them completely for granted. What happens when what is known is not so secure, when it frays, unravels, and comes undone?  What if suddenly the utensils resist the function for which they were designed? What are they then and what are we in relationship to them? Is this object ruined when it cannot act as a fork does or is there potential for new use and new growth?

"Division" is the first in a series of work entitled "Undone." The main body of the fork is a piece of my family's cherished silver collection. By using it for my artwork I have both destroyed its original, noble function and have transformed it into an object of philosophical inquiry.
