Compost Technology
A
reconfiguration of a computer graphic piece done for my employer, a newspaper,
in 1996. The original was sized for a full newspaper page. This is a condensed
version. Part of the illustrations were done with gouache water color paints on
paper and scanned into the computer, and part were done in the computer using
Adobe Illustrator.
I come from a long line of composters. My grandfather and father both had permanent compost heaps in their gardens. I have one and my grown daughter who now lives in England has one. (It may be genetic.) I produced this graphic initially for Earth Day in 1996, using research to add information that would make it a more educational presentation. Of course, I learned a lot myself in the process, as with any gardening research project. I am always amazed at people who have gardens and throw into the trash grass clippings, coffee grounds, kitchen waste, autumn leaves and other valuable sources for plant nutrients. I hope this changes a few minds, which is what art should do. We are all surrounded by compostable materials that only need to be heaped together into a pile. It's just about that easy and it's usually all free. What a deal.
