The visceral stories and images in medieval hagiography play an important role in my work. I explore how the mystique of saints facilitates medieval Christians' belief in the divine. I am fascinated by the power of belief. Miracles happen for those who are receptive to them. Medieval historian Eve Levin says that "Christian teachings, as enshrined in saints' lives and didactic tales, taught believers to anticipate manifestations of divine power in the world around them." The sheer visual power of St. Agatha's attribute: severed breasts on a plate, pushed me to make Aunt Agatha's Delicious, Award-winning Nipples of Venus. Breasts and bonbons, food and the female body - these have been intertwined for centuries.
